DJ's are just human jukeboxes. Do you agree or do you think it's something a little deeper than that?
I think that is an assumption made by someone who wanted to be a DJ but never made it! We are anything but, we create a particular vibe and sound thru both music selection and how it is mixed together with a live 'human element' feel to it… I'd like to see a juke box that can do that for you.
What is it that can best describe what you play?
I play anything that's jackin' with Groove, Funk and Soul in it whether it be hard-edged or as chilled-out as u like! I Enjoy most shades of House, Broken Beats, Tech and Breaks… whether it be a lounge sound or a big room tune Its gotta be a good production as well to really grab ya. I dig good vocals, I love acoustic music, and always enjoy a track with decent percussion.
Do you think that in the long term, your style will play a much bigger part in the scene than it does at the moment? Are you in a transitional period as you experiment and develop your sound further or do you intend to stick to your current sound?
I'd like to think that I'm making headway with the combination of styles I incorporate into my sets, I aim to entertain and to give the people out there a good show. Its always a challenge because the crowd will vary from week to week as can the venue im playing so its good to be prepared for whatever the punters are into musically while still sticking to a style that resembles your own sound. I am in a transition period as I have just finished a residency that didn't allow me to express myself as freely with my music as I would have liked. I'm looking positively towards where I'm headed now and as the scene here in Perth continues to develop I hope that my influence with have a part in it. At the moment I'll stick to what im playing for a while it seems to be working!
Who are some of the artists that have inspired you over the years?
Originally it was more underground music always with a backbeat of funk and soul, artists like Eddie Amador, Gene Ferris, DJ Sneak, Doc Martin & Derrick Carter were on the agenda for me as well Armand Van Helden, Roger Sanchez, Josh Wink & Masters at Work. Nowadays I'm getting right into stuff by Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, JT Donaldson & Stacey Kidd. Ive always followed Label's such as Strictly Rhythm, Peppermint Jam, OM & Defected which have consistantly produced a good variety in upfront club and lounge music. I'm also a big fan of some alternative artists i.e. Peshay & Roni Size for Drum and Bass, Richie Hawtin & Derrick May for Techno, and DJ Shadow & Thievery Corporation for downbeat.
Name five releases that have left their mark on you, and tell us why they did.
A Higher State of Consciousness - Josh Wink will always blow me away every time Ii hear it, they don't make acid like that anymore!
Two Phatt Guitars - Direkt that huge nosedive riff is second to none and it was a big dance floor tune for me before I even knew the first thing about DJing!
Keep Pushin' On - Boris Duglosh feat Inaya Day Club anthem for the ages and first real house tune I ever bought.
Spastik - Richie Hawtin love the build-up… just love the build-up, thumper :
Backfired - MAW one of the all-time best house tunes ever produced and ive seen it turn what was an empty dance floor into a party! It has a great feel good vibe and very catchy vocal!!
Name the worst record you own and why.
Umm, George Thorogood and The Destroyers first album… its was given to me I swear!!
Who in the local scene impresses you the most and why?
There are too many to mention… Adam Kelly for his amazing performances, Paul Malone for his great musical talent and cool style, Lee Wilson who is Perth's original Funk-Soul Brother, Nic Tan who is technically unbelievable, Joby for his divine track selection, Riki from the Church who is always so consistent, The list goes… on there is a lot of talent here in Perth indeed!
Quick 5 questions:
Favourite Perth Event: Sunshine People 2003
Hottest Chick In The World: Elisha Cuthbert from 24
Favourite Animal: Woman
Favourite Perth Pub: Belgian Beer Cafe
Worst Movie Of All Time: Bad Boy Bubby
Finally, with the turbulent nature of the Perth music scene at the moment, how do you see things evolving and changing over the next few months, and where do you think you will be amongst it all?
I think it is in a real slump at the moment but the buildup to summer will hopefully see a new breed of punters ready to get out there and find out what its really all about - the music! Perth is still so unique in its trends that its hard to say which direction it will take next, many clubs have been undergoing management changes, renovations etc and it's a prime time for DJs in Perth to step up and see what in store for them as it looks like summer is going to erupt into nightclub mayhem and I hope to be there as I mentioned before doing my part musically to give those punters a great night out every chance I get :)
