Merging live musicians with a pile of electronics and sampling, Flow Dynamics is the latest project from Australia's Dave McKinney. Dave was also a founding member of electronic act Rhibosome and is one of the major songwriters and producers behind the recently released Impulse/Get Ready 12" single on Freestyle Records as well as the full length Rhibosome debut album.
Dave's music has been supported by Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson, Russ Dewbury, Mr Scruff, Adrian Gibson, Ashley Beedle, Nik Weston, Patrick Forge, Jelly Jazz, and Tadashi Yabe (UFO). His most recent release was described as "Party funk which I've been caning" by DJ Spinna, "Dancefloor dynamite!" by Quinton Scott (Harmless / Strut Records) and "Timeless" by Adam Freeland.
The debut Flow Dynamics 12” single is out on Feb 14 2005 through Freestyle Records in UK, Europe & Japan, and through Invada Records in Australia & Canada. Flow Dynamics was a recent finalist in the 2004 Australian Music Oz Awards and has just been nominated for Best Electronic Producer and Best Urban Music Act in the 2005 WAMi Awards.
Dave is currently holed up in the studio working on the debut album and a stack of singles and remixes - a mixed-up pile of funk, hiphop, breaks, house, drum & bass, broken beats and percussion with influences from London, New York, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Perth, and everywhere in between...
Rewind back to 1992 and Dave was at uni studying marine biology, but after hearing mad stories of South America he travelled to Brasil for a year where the music, culture and people completely blew his mind.
When Dave got home the music bug was itching so heavily he deferred his uni and jumped headlong into music. He started playing capoeira with Mestre Jorge (Samba de Roda) and eventually became a core member of traditional Brasilian percussion outfit Ogun Brasil playing Batucada, Pagode, Bossas and Afro Bloco.
Around this time, Dave was also getting right into samplers, drum machines, dj-ing, and anything electronic with a hint of soul or funk. By 1997 he had formed a studio production team with Clayton Chipper called Rhibosome, and after writing a series of electronic soundtracks for live theatre shows, they soon morphed into a full live band and hit the stage.
Since then, Dave has played live and electronic all over Australia including festivals like the Big Day Out, Vibes on a Summer's Day, Livid, Splendour in the Grass, Science Fiction, and Breakfest. Dave has released music thru Freestyle Records (UK), Offworld Sounds (Aust), Hydrofunk/EMI (Australia) and Marble Bar (UK) including remixes of Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, Aboriginal musician Richard Walley, and Zimbabwean outfit African Music Congress.
Throughout all this time, Dave has spent plenty of hours behind the deks spinning funk, hip hop, house, broken beats and afro and latin tunes. You can hear some of Dave's mixups on the Funk Truck Mixtape Series Volumes 1-4 or chek the dj charts for all things soulful and funky, old and new.
