DJ Profile: Declan

DJ Declan DJ's are just human jukeboxes. Do you agree or do you think it's something a little deeper than that?
Some djs are, particularly those that play in more commercial clubs. Many djs however, strive to create their own sound and atmosphere, and become known for that. The trick is trying to deal with requests politely if those requests don't fall within your style of music!

What is it that can best describe what you play?
Deep and funky house music, although this can vary depending on my mood or the gig that I play at. I can play anything between hip hop and hard techno as well.

Do you think that in the long term, your style will play a much bigger part in the scene than it does at the moment? Are you in a transitional period as you experiment and develop your sound further or do you intend to stick to your current sound?
I tend to play the type of music that I enjoy, even though I still have one eye on my audience. I think that house music at the moment is in a transitional period at present, which means a lot of house djs have had to look for other styles of music to play. The last 18 months have been a bit quiet in terms of consistently quality house releases.

Who are some of the artists that have inspired you over the years?
Masters at Work, Moodymann, Cajmere, Derreck Carter, Richie Hawtin, Kerri Chandler, Jazzanova, I could go on!!

Name five releases that have left their mark on you, and tell us why they did.
Music so Wonderful - Vivian Lee - it came out in about 1992 and was one of the first US Vocal house tracks that I heard and owned. It was a time when I was enjoying rave music, and when I heard this, I was instantly hooked!
Plastic Dreams - Jaydee - Again an early house / techno record that I heard at a dance party in about 1993. It sounded so different, and definitely influenced the deeper edge to my music.
U Got Me Up (Underground Goodies Remix) - Cajmere - pure jackin funk Chicago house music - Everyone is into Igloo, the Freaks, cut up house etc these days. Cajmere was doing this sound almost 10 years ago!!
Love and Happiness - India / Masters at Work - Pure vocal tribal house music. An all time classic.
March of the Tangent Prone - Freaky Chakra - Not a classic, but one of the first "tech house" style tracks to get my attention before tech house was a style of music. Wobbly wobbly bass line with freaky noises throughout.

Name the worst record you own and why.
Um I own a lot of dodgy records!! No comment!

Who in the local scene impresses you the most and why?
Perth's Dave Clark - he sticks true to his principles and is a very underrated dj. Likewise Paul Gamblin - Friday night's Black and Blue on RTR - probably the best radio program in Perth

Quick 5 questions:
Favourite Perth Event: Any Metro Boules Event I have played at at Geisha, or previous Raw Funk gigs.
Hottest Chick In The World: My girlfriend!!
Favourite Animal: Pig
Favourite Perth Pub: Inglewood Hotel (Sunday Nights check it out!!)
Worst Movie Of All Time: Any big Hollywood American blockbuster!

Finally, with the turbulent nature of the Perth music scene at the moment, how do you see things evolving and changing over the next few months, and where do you think you will be amongst it all?
Things will be quiet for a while, particularly in terms of good quality house music. Too many people are trying to do the same thing and interesting djs aren't being given an outlet. I will be continuing to play on RTR Full Frequency on Thursdays, Inglewood Hotel on Sunday evenings and occasionally at Geisha if I can stay up late enough.
